How scoring works
Personality tests live or die on trust. Here's exactly what happens between your answers and your scores — no black boxes.
1. The instrument: Big Five (OCEAN)
SuccessPath is built on the Big Five personality model — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism — the framework with the strongest standing in personality psychology. Our questions are written in the style of public-domain Big Five items (short, behavioral, first-person statements). We did not invent a new typology, and we don't sort you into a "type."
2. The scoring algorithm (deterministic)
Every answer is a 1–5 response from "Strongly disagree" to "Strongly agree." Scoring is fixed arithmetic, applied identically to everyone:
- Reverse-scoring. Items marked reverse-scored are flipped (a 5 becomes a 1, a 4 becomes a 2, and so on) so all items point the same direction.
- Dimension score. We take the mean of a dimension's items and rescale it to 0–100:
score = round(((mean − 1) / 4) × 100). - Facet scores. The same math, restricted to a facet's items (e.g., the 6 assertiveness items within Extraversion). Neuroticism facets are displayed flipped as strengths — "Stress resilience" and "Even temper" — where higher is steadier.
- Percentile bands. Your score is compared against a fixed reference distribution (below) and expressed as an approximate percentile.
No AI or language model scores your personality. In later versions, AI may write explanatory prose around these fixed numbers — it will never invent or alter them.
3. The reference sample
Percentiles are currently computed against a placeholder reference distribution (normal, mean 50, standard deviation 15, applied to every dimension). We publish this plainly because a percentile is only as good as its reference group. As our user base grows, we will calibrate against real, anonymized respondent data and document the sample here.
4. Attention checks
Each test includes consistency items (reworded repeats). If your answers to a pair differ wildly, we flag the result as possibly rushed — we never block or discard it. You'll see a gentle note on your results page.
5. Limitations — read this
- Personality traits describe tendencies, not destinies. Scores suggest patterns; they don't predict your success or limit what you can become.
- A self-report test measures how you see yourself today — mood, context, and honesty all shape answers.
- SuccessPath is for self-reflection and career development — not a hiring, medical, or psychological diagnostic tool.
- Our terms prohibit using results for hiring, firing, promotion, or any other employment decisions.
